The Birth of the Company
Bush Hog found its start in Selma, Alabama, in 1951, by launching a brand-new tractor-pulled implement that could clear brush easily and quickly. Before then, clearing a piece of land involved many days of hard labor. You had to drive a tractor around to cut up some of the brush, then dozens of workers with hoes and axes had to spend days or weeks chopping up the organic material until the work was done.
Enter the company’s innovative implement to make both clearing and collecting this debris easier and faster. In fact, rumor has it that after seeing it for the first time, a farm exclaimed, “That thing eats bushes like a hog!” And thus, Bush Hog® was born, the name soon becoming a byline for sharp and reliable rotary cutters.
Taking the First Steps
The first item to roll off assembly lines was the Model 12, which was a 5’ wide rotary cutter with a three-point lift and a stump jumper to facilitate clearing land. The Model 12 was built from heavy-gauge steel to make it durable and priced at $320, forever changing how farmers cleared and prepared their fields.
In fact, to spread the word about their products and get farmers interested in them, the first salesman, Earl Goodwin, pulled the Model 12 behind his own car to demonstrate its effectiveness first hand.
With Age Comes Wisdom...and a Bigger Manufacturing Facility
While the company initially focused on building one machine at a time in a dirt-floor factory, Bush Hog now operates a 500,000 square-foot manufacturing facility that makes use of trained welders as well as robotic technology to build their equipment.
Not only that, but they’ve expanded out to 17 product lines and distribute through 1,800 farm equipment dealers.
