Check Your Gas and Engine Oil

Before starting your riding mower, you’ll want to check if it has sufficient oil to keep the machine running. Top off any low levels and replace the oil if it appears to be sludgy.

Start Your Engine

If your machine has a manual transmission, you will need to press down both the brake and clutch or the dual-purpose pedal before turning the key. However, if your machine has an automatic transmission, you will have to press a button or turn on a switch.

Engage Your Blades

Now, you will need to adjust the cutting height of your machine by setting the adjustment lever. You will want to engage your blades with the lever or switch and get your riding mower ready to mow your lawn.

When trimming the grasses in your yard, you’ll want to drive your lawn mower in straight lines and make a U-turn to head in the opposite direction. To avoid missing any spots, overlap your previous path a little bit and continue mowing.

Perform Regular Maintenance

If you want your riding mower to last for years, you’ll need to maintain it regularly. Here are a few ways to keep your machine in tip-top shape:

  • Make sure you sharpen your riding mower’s blades at least after every 20 to 25 hours of use.
  • If they appear dented or cracked, consider replacing them immediately.
  • Change the oil and oil filters proactively and top off any low fluid levels.
  • Check the condition of your tires and adjust the air pressure to your manufacturer’s recommendations.

We hope this guide helps you use your riding mower like a pro. If you have more questions, get them addressed by our knowledgeable staff at Holder and Sons Equipment. Our dealership is in Durham, NC, but we proudly serve Raleigh and Greensboro.
